Eat your Heart Out.

Your idea of bliss is to wake up on a Monday, knowing you haven’t a single engagement for the entire week.

You are cradled in a white paper cocoon tied up with typewriter ribbon.”

– Edna Ferber

Okay, well, I don’t know what the second half of that quote means (unless it refers to a writer) … but the first half is great. 🙂 And hmm, it’s not 100% true, but mostly true. I’ve tried to scale down this week for a few personal reasons and also to catch up! I have lots of galleries that need posting. Hoping to get my pregnancy bum in gear this week and try to stay up as late as I want to stay up to get these galleries loaded.

But today … during the day … the kids rule my world.

Today we baked sugar cookies for Easter and decorated them …

Brenda (Gillian’s mom) Cute pics!! Yes, Lyla looks like she is the cat that ate the mouse! Ha Ha The girls look so serious while they are decorating 🙂 Are those from the cookie cutters I gave them? What precious memories for the L’s … imagine … Lucia can decorate cookies t 2 years old, and Lacey and Lyla can bake already! You are a good mom! xo

March 29, 2010 - 10:22 pm

Jennifer I just LOVE the look on Lyla’s face. You need to have a boy so Lyla can make that face when he sticks a grilled cheese in the DVD player! 🙂

March 28, 2010 - 9:04 pm

Tabitha Such beautiful girls – and the little one, what bigs eyes!!!

Sweet, sweet {edible} Spring.

Something was blooming in the Gauthier kitchen today.

No, it wasn’t the seedlings we planted a few weeks ago … this kind involved some pretty awesome – and tasty –  ingredients …

-straws (okay, so those aren’t tasty …)

– vanilla cake (getting tastier) or pudding

– Oreo or any type dark cookies (definitely tasty)

– ice cream (okay, we’ve hit the tasty bit for sure!)

– a flower or two

– more ice cream  (yeah!)

– whatever else you want to put inside the flower pot that is yummy and edible!  Be creative and use whatever will work or whatever you like!

Curious?

Here you go.

flowercake

Itty bitty flower pot cakes!!! … Now, don’t give me credit for this one.  I’m not THAT creative! 😉 I found this recipe online here and here (love this website!)  and just absolutely thought it was the cutest things ever!

So, I ran out the dollar store, purchased a ton of these pots (someone asked me if I was an ECE teacher buying supplies and I replied “At times, I feel like it with all the crafts we do in my home!!!”) and grabbed the ingredients needed to create these cute and tasty flower pot cakes … er, dessert… or whatever it’s officially called.

Here are the directions.

It literally took me five minutes. Easy-peasy.

– First, cut the cake into round circles and place it in the base of the flower pot … (I just used the top of a small glass cup to cut the round circle)

– Measure a straw into the flower pot and trim about an inch from the top (this is where the flower stem will go)

-then add a layer of ice cream (we used vanilla) or pudding – really it doesn’t matter so long as it is tasty and somewhat soft!

– and yes, add another layer of another kind of ice cream (you choose your favorite! Mine is mint chocolate chip!)

– And then the yummy part (if it’s not already yummy enough for you!) … sprinkle some crushed up Oreos (we put ours through the puree machine so it was very much like soil) to make it look dirt inside the flower pot – make sure you’ve covered the ice cream/yummy layers.

– pop a flower into the straw and voila! (The straw should be covered by the “soil” at this point).

flowercake3

Grab a spoon and dig in! I made one for each of the girls and they LOVED it! If you have little boys (or big boys), you can add some candy bugs or gummy worms to make it more boy-friendly. 🙂  Wouldn’t this be fun for a spring party or birthday get-together? (I just happen to be hosting  a baby shower on the weekend and maybe I’ll be making these for the guests…. )

flowercake2

So there you go – let’s celebrate spring and new life with a dessert that is worth digging in to!

{Don’t forget the gummy worms for the boys!}

P.S. Those cut little pots are only 3 for $1 at the Orangeville dollar store. Hurry up though because I think I bought most of them! 😉

March 28, 2010 - 9:09 pm

Rebecca Hall I also found these on line last week! I picked up all the stuff today and I am making them for an easter party tomorrow! Your’s turned out awesome!

March 26, 2010 - 11:01 am

Catherine Why didn’t you post this BEFORE my boys turned 2? I’ll have to remember this for next year! They look amazing!

March 26, 2010 - 12:30 am

lori You can actually make and bake the cake in the pot. It is one of the birthday parties I do with my business Little Chefs. The pots do take abit of time to cook and cool (30-45 minutes total) but when cool the kids can decorate with whatever you have on hand and they like! I call it “Dirt in a Pot” . I like to use a healthy brownie recipe that has zuchinni in it which I call the fertilizer!! Kids love to make and eat this. Cheers!

March 25, 2010 - 11:32 pm

Mom Gillian, you are getting so creative!!! 🙂

March 25, 2010 - 11:02 pm

Gorgeous.

A perk of my job?
I get to snuggle and photograph amazingly gorgeous newborns … like Miss Delicate, Precious little Madeleine  …

dsc_8354

Isn’t she just a vision of loveliness? Oh, I just {loooove} her sweet lips.

One thing that really impressed me with Madeleine’s mom was how easily she was nursing and how comfortable she was with it. That’s always so great to see – especially in first time mothers!
But as the babies get older, sometimes they get distracted during nursing … and that’s where these lovely nursing necklaces from A Better Birth come into play …

nursing-necklace

These lovely necklaces are handmade by Holly Lo of A Better Birth – and each necklace is unique, oh so funky and absolutely gorgeous, not to mention completely safe for your little ones. Wear your necklace while nursing to keep your baby’s fingers and attention focused on you …
