Tiny Brothers

When Lazer (as he is affectionately called) joined our family in December 2015, it was such a surprise. After having six girls in a row, I never imagined we would have a boy. Now, we have two little men in our lives!

And it couldn’t be sweeter. Truth be told, I was afraid to have boys {why? I guess because I was so used to having girls} – but God knew we needed these little men and our hearts have grown to adore these tiny brothers.

We are having fun getting used to our new family size, the  changing dynamics and the new loosely-followed schedule. My husband started laughing the other day … I turned to him and asked him what he was laughing at …

He looked at me, his eyes twinkling, and said, “How did we end up with so many children?!”

One year at a time, I guess … 🙂 … our large family was not planned and it was not unplanned. It is God’s doing, truly. Grateful to be on this incredible journey with these children of ours!

Gigi Thank you, Teresa! Hope you are well! Your boys must be so big now!

October 4, 2017 - 2:49 pm

Gigi Katy, thank you for always being so encouraging.
I have a friend with the same story as yours, although they were able to reverse their decision and God blessed them with three more children. I know this topic is very private and sensitive to many – I do not think, by any means, that having more children makes one holier or closer to God. I do know, however, that He looks at His Lambs as blessings and therefore, I choose to do the same. Your decision to help your friends and mothers is beautiful and shows a servant’s heart.

October 4, 2017 - 1:21 pm

Katy Lovely photos! 🙂 Your boys are adorable! I love that God is in control of your family size! My husband and I decided we were done after three children (we were still really young) and now regret it. 🙁 I always encourage every couple not to do anything permanent because they *will* regret it. I try to be content with it though and let the Lord use me to help other mamas with littles. My children are 16, 14 and 11 now so and are more independent. We homeschool as well but they do a lot of things on their own….that enables me to get my housework done and then have time to help a friend of mine who has many littles (she reminds me of you…as she and her husband are having as many children as they Lord gives them. They also adopted two girls ages 12 and 7 from foster care.)So it is a blessing to know that the Lord is using me in other ways despite our mistake many years ago (when my husband had a vasectomy).

It is truly a blessing to watch your family grow and hear about your days! Thank you for sharing with us! :o)
Warmly,
Katy

Rebecca Oh my gosh what cuties!!!! I would love to hear how you came to the decision to have a large family. I enjoy hearing other families stories who decided to go against the norm of 2 or less children 🙂

Claire That last picture, oh my goodness, heart melting!!

7 Days 💙

“When God lays a new-born babe in the arms of a mother, he says to her heart,
“Take this child and nurse it for me and I will give you your wages.”
The answer of maternal love should be,
‘Oh God, you have put your noblest workmanship into my hands. I accept the precious trust.
I will shelter this young life under your mercy-seat.
I will be truthful that it may never learn falsehood.
I will nurse this soul in its infancy with the sincere milk of love,
that in after years it may bear strong meat for strong service of God and righteousness.
Oh, Heavenly Father, make my life in harmony with yourself,
that this young life may reflect your blessed image in following my example!’
To such pious fidelity—God offers the highest wages;
he pays the heart’s claim, in the heart’s own coin.”

Today marks one week in which  precious Loyal has joined our family.

Oh my, how can I explain how lovely and delightful and wonderful it feels it is to hold your little newborn? I’m sure all mothers can remember that incredible feeling of having your little ones bundled in your arms, snuggled against your chest, protected from the world’s cares against your bosom.

Having our 8th baby has swelled my heart to yet again another size – to hold more love for all the children in our family, to have more patience for all the little ones (they are only little for a while, right, mothers?) and to be a more faithful, consistent, gentle mother and wife. You truly cannot hold a newborn in your arms and have a harsh attitude or critical outlook or a sour expression.
It just doesn’t work together – at all.

When Abby comes home from work, with the troubles of the world weighing on his shoulders, I hand him our little baby. Not because I do not want to hold Loyal – not because I am busy and need my hands free (that is why slings were created!) – not because I “need a break” – but because I think babies are somewhat healing in some ways.

They make you sit … stop, breathe, relax and ponder as you stare down at their delicate fingers and pretty little faces … their tiny toes and gentle, sighing breaths. They are little wonders from Heaven. Our children are also in love with Loyal. We love each and every baby that comes into the family – each new baby added is just as exciting. It is wonderful to see our family grow this way yet again…

To those who are waiting for a baby, I will pray for your arms and heart to be filled.
For those who have lost a baby, I will pray for healing and peace in your hearts.
For those who have rejected a baby, I will pray for your heart to be softened and for you to see the blessing and wonderful work of the Father in the little ones He brings forth.
For those who have arms full and busy lives with lots of children, I will pray for patience, love to fill your hearts and for you to be encouraged in your daily work.

September 27, 2017 - 5:55 am

Katy So, so sweet! 🙂

Our Blessing Has Arrived …

Abby and I are so pleased to let you all know … our sweet baby BOY has arrived … straight, fresh from Heaven, smelling all delicious and lovely and completely adored by his big family …
Loyal Albert Kenneth is here, snuggled warmly in my lap, sighing sweet little sighs of joy … a piece of our family puzzle knit so perfectly in the womb by God’s hands …

His birth was wonderful … and I would like to record it as a memory for myself, to remind myself of the sweet, precious quiet details that are often forgotten in the busy-ness of life …

Loyal is our biggest baby yet! Born Tuesday, September 19th, at 3:56 a.m. – 6 lbs 10 oz – his size was a sure shock and surprise to us all! He has lovely dark hair and chubby cheeks and smells of Heaven. More than once, the girls have asked why does Loyal smell so sweet? Because, of course, he is straight from Heaven, I replied …

Things have been busy around here since Loyal’s birth, but it also has been lovely. In same ways, it has reminded me a bit of the Waltons … as family pops in and visits and the days are filled with love from family and coffee mugs are strewn across the long kitchen table, hyper, happy children line the benches at the table, excited with all the attention of the event. As Abby runs a very sensitive business (the funeral home), you cannot just choose your time off – if there is a need, he is there. This week has been busy at the funeral home and a very emotional one at that. My husband has had to work (picture the old days … when men did not get breaks from work and life just continues) but his mom has come over every day to help around the home.  Last night, as she took the girls and Lazer for a bumpy golf cart ride through the fields behind the house, I sat holding baby Loyal and watched the children, while indulging in a delicious slice of homemade blackberry pie (lovingly made by my mom)  … the children were loud and laughing, silly … the sun was setting quickly behind them, disappearing beneath the canopy of the back forest and I thanked God. Again. He has blessed us.

A favorite verse:
A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow,
because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child,
she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.

John 16:21

P.S. I would love to post more photos but there, of course, has to be a little technology glitch and I cannot retrieve the photos off the card right now. I will post some as soon as I can figure out the glitch…

When Having Baby #8 is Not the Same as {Shelling Peas}

I had to laugh the other day as a dear friend expressed a comment that someone had said to her, when she had told them our family was about to have baby #8.

“Well, I guess at that point, it’s like shelling peas …”

Hmmmm.

Well, let me just say- with a smile and some grace to the one who would think such a funny thought – giving birth each time is a blessing and a gift from God. However, it is not easier, quicker, faster or more fun to deliver and be in labour. And I write this as I sit on the edge of my seat, waiting for God to pick a timing for our little one to arrive (officially 37 weeks as Monday!). Each birth is one I thank God for and my husband and I are truly grateful to God for our children!

Yet, that does not make each long pregnancy, every intense, pain filled labour or even messy-grace-filled parenting any easier. We still have our challenges in parenting – oh my, do we ever – and I still have terrible pains while in labour {I am blessed with good labours, but they are still painful!} … babies do not just pop out as some would imagine …. Labour is called labour for a reason, right, ladies?

However, with the pain and the discomfort of each pregnancy, the expectation of the agony of labour and the worry that goes along with it (will this baby be healthy? Will the birth go okay? Will there be complications? How will we adjust afterwards? Will it be chaotic? Will I get everything done that needs to get done?), I would not trade it for an easier life. Why?

{Oh dear, just as I was caught up with most of my canning, a large lot of tomatoes are ripening in the garden…
I will take it as a blessing!}

I suppose I truly do see these precious babies that are born into our family as little wrapped up gifts from Heaven. Why God would choose to bless our family eight times in a row is beyond me, as we are humble parents, still learning, still fumbling through life and still praying for forgiveness when we make mistakes. Abby and I fail at much in parenting, we are still learning as we go (aren’t we all?) and we are, by far, still sinners. Yet, this journey is wonderful and blessed and filled with lovely surprises, often many challenges, followed by daily joys.

Like tight hugs from your one year old when he sees you sitting and wraps his arms around your neck.
Or the silly, toddler chatter from your three year old as she tells you about her imaginary friend, Violet.
Like the joy you see in your 5 year old’s eyes when you tell her she did a GREAT job at making her bed.
… the gappy-toothy-smile from your six year old who is the sweetest thing to grace our family.
… the eager questions and delight in God’s natural kingdom from your eight year old, intrigued with everything God has placed on this earth.
… the intense strength and strong character of your 11 year old, who just wants to be unique and original.
and the gentle grace and goodness of your 13 year old’s sweet spirit, as she grows and learns how to transform gracefully into a young lady.

No, I would not trade this life for all the riches, all the world traveling, all the money, all the fortune, a fancy house, easier work schedule, more free time, more career time, more “me” time … I would not trade it for anything.

God’s grace is plentiful, thankfully. He has chosen Abby & I to raise these precious children for Him and so we do. We raise them up with the prayer and hope that they will love the Lord with ALL their heart, serve Him and show the world where their hope is to be found – in Jesus! There is no other greater joy than to pray that our children will grow to serve the Lord with all their hearts.

And so, now, as we await the upcoming birth of our precious baby, which happens, yes, to be baby #8, it is still the same fear, the same unknown, the same excitement and the same pain as, perhaps, baby #5 or so. It is labour –  but there is relief and joy and abundant blessings and a fountain of love and peace after the baby is born. All week long I have mentally struggled with feeling nervous over this birth, but I know those thoughts are from Satan and not from God! I know God has this birth plan all laid out and I will TRUST Him to bring forth our baby in His perfect will and timing.

Often, while in labour, I will find myself praying out loud. I just can’t help it. That is where my physical strength will come from and I will need to cry out to the Lord … in my rawest pain and with my sincerest cry for help, it will be to the Lord. Not to my husband to help me, not to my midwife, but to Jesus.

I am SO excited to meet our little one when the time comes. I am so delighted to introduce our new baby to the excited sisters and little boy-who-has-no-idea-what-is-to come. I am honored to be a mother and to be a parent. I am blessed beyond measure. And I am thankful. Even for the pain of each labour and the changes in body and life. I would not trade it for the world.

{a batch of make-ahead-muffin-mix for the fridge
For recipe, see below}

P.S. A home birth is planned, but of course, God holds all those details in His hands. If it is to be at home, then we need to move three children from the designated room so I can have access to bathtub, which is in the bathroom attached to the girls’ room. The best case scenario will be if all the children sleep through the birth, even while we move them from their room and place them quietly elsewhere in the house. I am praying all goes smoothy. I have not had a birth in the daytime in a long time so I am hoping this is a night birth, as well. What fun to have the children wake up in the morning and rush in and meet their new sibling!

Recipe for Make-Ahead Fridge Muffin Mix:

9 cups of flour
2 cups of brown sugar
8 teaspoons of baking powder
2 teaspoons of baking soda
pinch of salt

4 cups of buttermilk
1 1/4 of oil/yogurt/applesauce
3 teaspoons of vanilla extract
6 eggs, lightly beaten.

Mix dry and wet ingredients separately.
Once stirred, add dry to wet ingredients, mixing gently. Cover and refrigerate for up to a week.

To use, just scoop out what you need. Place in a greased or lined muffin tin.
You may add in what you wish for the muffins …
…apple chunks, cranberries, peaches, nutmeg and oatmeal, coconut, flax seeds,
chocolate chips and more. Bake at 350 F. for 20-25 minutes.

If the recipe yields to much mix for your liking, feel free to half the recipe.
Or use up the extra batter to bless a neighbour or friend in need.

{Almost} Turkey Time

Do you remember the pictures of our tiny turkeys from a few months ago?

Well, here is Lacey’s turkey – nearly grown up. He’s a good size but our friends’ turkeys, which are from the same hatch, are even bigger!

They still have one month to grow. Will this turkey, aptly named Mr. Gobblepants, remain for winter or not?

Time will tell.
[Really, it’s up to daddy … I’m voting to keep this turkey over winter …]

September 15, 2017 - 6:52 am

Gigi Yes, raising him for meat was the point, so ….. the only way he’d stay is if he had a mate and they could promise us fertile eggs for spring for more turkeys….

September 14, 2017 - 10:27 pm

L Eat him for thanksgiving!!! It will be so yummy. Oh I can just taste that fresh, home farm raised meat.
But I know it would be sad to say goodbye…
It’s a toss up!!
