Against the Grain.

A friend knocked at my door today and, with a worried tone in her voice, ask me if I was okay.

Oh yes, everything’s great – except poor sick, under-the-weather babies – but yes, everything’s fine!, I said as I opened the door and gestured her inside.  Why do you ask?

She explained – rumour had it – that I was overwhelmed, stressed out, having a rough go with life and when I up and quit Facebook last week, it made the talk spread.

To be honest, I did not put too much thought into quitting facebook – it’s been at the back of my mind to sign out for good for a while now but held on for family and loved ones in an effort to stay connected. But just recently, I questioned myself as to why I was still logged in to this ever-growing-popular social media.

I did not quit facebook because:

1) I was having a nervous breakdown.

2) I am overwhelmed with life and children and whatever else …

3) I’m depressed. {Hee hee!}

Some of my reasons on quitting:

1)  As of right now, Abby and I don’t want our children to have facebook accounts when they are of age – that’s a personal conviction and maybe that will change so they can stay connected to grandparents or distant relatives [ or maybe not – I really don’t see why they can’t stay connected in other ways – letters and e-mail were around long before the world of Facebook]. So, my life needs to be an example.

2) Time – wouldn’t we all love more of it? I would! I’m sure if I logged up all the wasted hours spent online, I would regret it.

3)  Peace. Although there are a lot of positives to social media, there’s also a lot of negatives. I would rather fill my mind with less negative and more positive.

4) My facebook photo albums were more organized than my real life. That, right there, makes me think – why? Time to fix that.

5) When something becomes so common place that it’s crazy NOT to follow along, it makes me question why we’re all following along anyways. [Like television – my parents got rid of our t.v. when I was a young girl – we never regretted it one day – but I’m sure my parents were looked at and heard people say, “What?! You don’t have t.v.!” Well, guess what? We still do not have t.v. in our house. Sometimes these choices may seem so against the grain but in the light of eternity, they are what we want to invest into our family.]

So, for all you who have e-mailed and asked if I deleted you or blocked you on facebook, that is not the case. 🙂 Please don’t think that I was trying to be rude.

I’ll still be blogging, as that, too, was around before Facebook.

However, I am simply simplifying.

And going against the grain – just a little bit.

Sarah Mailhot I love this Gillian — certainly something I contemplate…often. By the way, for whatever it is worth, you go against the grain in so many ways (i.e. FIVE little girls! I love it!) Way to keep to your principles and being on guard to protect them. I know I am not your mom, a sister, or even a really close friend, but I am still really proud of you! Enjoy all the space you just created!

Jody Hi Gillian. I too wondered and asked friends where you were. I was so used to your almost daily posts like myself. I have also felt that it consumes me at times and I’m not spending the time doing what I should. I have a daughter that is 11 and do not want her to have an fb acct. I’ve experienced cyber bullying first hand. I applaud you and wish you well. I still pop on time to time and still use it as a business marketing connection but not like I used to. Good luck to you all.

Chris Well we will miss seeing those beautiful adventures and I loved how you blessed us with great thing, note this though…you inspired me to get out to church, your invites and Randy’s. Following along with your family and your braveness inspired us to get rid of TV and without that we may not have made that choice…one of the best ones we have ever made. You bless so many with the wonderful example you set to your family and friends. So I suppose timing was everything for us. Blessed to call you friend and will miss your daily posts in one place… so easy to see…as time for me doesnt allow me to surf all the blogs I would love to follow. So guess its the good old fashioned way for us girl. Now get yourself a pretty pink answering machine so I can call and if you are out you will know it want to book a sewing date with lacey real sooN! Found a great fun pattern LVoe you girl, and knew you were ok. knew your priority was and always is your family (god included of course!) hugs and big wet sloppy kisses from all! if you are on the mend I will drop off Laceys bday present.
