A friend knocked at my door today and, with a worried tone in her voice, ask me if I was okay.
Oh yes, everything’s great – except poor sick, under-the-weather babies – but yes, everything’s fine!, I said as I opened the door and gestured her inside. Why do you ask?
She explained – rumour had it – that I was overwhelmed, stressed out, having a rough go with life and when I up and quit Facebook last week, it made the talk spread.
To be honest, I did not put too much thought into quitting facebook – it’s been at the back of my mind to sign out for good for a while now but held on for family and loved ones in an effort to stay connected. But just recently, I questioned myself as to why I was still logged in to this ever-growing-popular social media.
I did not quit facebook because:
1) I was having a nervous breakdown.
2) I am overwhelmed with life and children and whatever else …
3) I’m depressed. {Hee hee!}
Some of my reasons on quitting:
1) As of right now, Abby and I don’t want our children to have facebook accounts when they are of age – that’s a personal conviction and maybe that will change so they can stay connected to grandparents or distant relatives [ or maybe not – I really don’t see why they can’t stay connected in other ways – letters and e-mail were around long before the world of Facebook]. So, my life needs to be an example.
2) Time – wouldn’t we all love more of it? I would! I’m sure if I logged up all the wasted hours spent online, I would regret it.
3) Peace. Although there are a lot of positives to social media, there’s also a lot of negatives. I would rather fill my mind with less negative and more positive.
4) My facebook photo albums were more organized than my real life. That, right there, makes me think – why? Time to fix that.
5) When something becomes so common place that it’s crazy NOT to follow along, it makes me question why we’re all following along anyways. [Like television – my parents got rid of our t.v. when I was a young girl – we never regretted it one day – but I’m sure my parents were looked at and heard people say, “What?! You don’t have t.v.!” Well, guess what? We still do not have t.v. in our house. Sometimes these choices may seem so against the grain but in the light of eternity, they are what we want to invest into our family.]
So, for all you who have e-mailed and asked if I deleted you or blocked you on facebook, that is not the case. 🙂 Please don’t think that I was trying to be rude.
I’ll still be blogging, as that, too, was around before Facebook.
However, I am simply simplifying.
And going against the grain – just a little bit.
