Every Tuesday, the older girls have fiddle lessons in the morning so it’s just me and the four little ones at home. We always have the task of creating a treat for our Tea at Two on Tuesdays.
Today, we decided to turn our bread recipe into hot cross buns. I know that for many, hot cross buns are a special part of Easter, but I do not recall every having tried such a dessert! The girls love Tasha Tudor books {and so do I!} – one of her Easter traditions is to make and serve hot cross buns – so we were enticed to do the same.
I used this recipe but added a bit more sugar to make them sweet. I know, traditionally, the buns have dried fruit (raisins, cranberries) but some of the girls do not like such sweet morsels in their bread, so I did not add them this time. [I will add them next time, however… as I love raisins and cranberries!]
Of course, baking with little ones is always an adventure … 🙂
{rolling out the buns – we kept theirs aside and they ate them as their special treat after they were baked …}
We set the rolls to rise above the warming drawer on the cookstove. They rose for about an hour.
Once they were baked, Lucia brushed butter on the tops of the buns.
So yummy!
We added crosses from icing sugar [2 cups of icing sugar with 2 tablespoons of water mixed together].
and we set them out for our Tea at Two on Tuesdays. They were truly super delicious, warm from the oven, with melting butter.
P.S. After this batch turned out so well, I decided to make two more batches for rolls for dinner to go with our homemade soup. They also turned out wonderful and were quickly eaten. I really love this bread recipe! You should give it a try!
