Perspective.

[Since I’m on a partial-maternity leave right now, please forgive me that a lot of my posts are personal and very much family-related. I hope you all don’t mind.]

The lesson I learned from my weekly Bible study:

Once a man came upon three rock masons at work.

“What are you doing
,” he asked.

I am carving these stones into the different sizes wanted,” answered the first.

I am earning six dollars a day,” replied the second.

I,” replied the third, “am helping to build a great cathedral!”

[Only he had caught the vision of the great work he was helping to do on a daily basis.]

Once a woman came upon three mothers at work.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“I am doing the weekly laundry,” answered the first.

“I am doing a bit of household drudgery,” replied the second.

“I am mothering four young children who some day will fill important and useful spheres in life, and washing laundry is part of my grand task in caring for these souls who shall live forever,” replied the third.

Wow. This really spoke to me …

How is your perspective on your job, your daily to-do-list, your calling in your life?

February 28, 2011 - 3:10 pm

Cassie I LOVE this! I am intrigued at that book as well. Might have to see if some of my girlfriend want to do a study on it. Will be a fun alternative to our traditional bible study!

Keri Fabulous post and pics Gillian! XO

February 25, 2011 - 9:55 am

Molly Wow! That puts things in to perspective, I needed that!

February 24, 2011 - 10:55 pm

Teresa Galashan I was just talking about this exact issue at our mom’s group today! Trying to remember on a day to day basis what the big picture is, and not getting caught up in a “drudgery” mindset so we don’t forget WHY or HOW we’re doing what we’re doing. It’s so easy to get caught up in “to-do” lists and miss the journey because we’re just thinking of the destination, isn’t it. Thanks for the parable and pictures, it’s going to stick with me! Especially this coming wonderful summer, when I’ll be snuggling a sweet new baby and waist-deep in dirty laundry. πŸ˜‰

February 24, 2011 - 10:14 pm

Brenda (Gillian’s Mom) These are such wonderful pictures! (AGAIN) I have heard that saying before but it certainly is a magnificent truth!! I adore these pictures, they are soft and full of joy and much love! I love the one where Lyla is copying you and Lucia is jumping on your back!! LOL xoxo

February 24, 2011 - 9:40 pm

Brenda (Gillian’s Mom) I love this, Gillian!!
Had heard it before but it is such a magnificent truth!!
The pictures are wonderful … so sweet and full of love! I love the one where Lyla is copying you and Lucia is jumping on your back! LOL xoxo

Fooled.

Generally speaking, I try to force my children provide healthy meals for my four girlies.

But one, in particular, is extremely stubborn.

Lucia.

I’m not quite sure how she’s alive, quite frankly. No vegetables. Barely any fruit. Only cereal and the odd muffin. Oh, and bread. Yeah, pretty sad.

Not sure why she’s so picky (oh wait, yes I do. I was exactly like that as a child …) … my other girls cried because they couldn’t eat rice and broccoli while we were in Disney World. Go figure.

Introducing …Β  the Sneaky Chef.

Oh, I’m sure you have all heard about her and her cookbooks … I know I have … but last week after the water-cooler-chat-amongst-the-library-moms giving the recipes the thumbs up, I thought I’d give it a shot.

Well, it worked.

Today, Lucia ateΒ  –AND ENJOYED – the dreaded spinach, blueberries (which she doesn’t normally eat), bran & wheat germ … all hidden in the delightful, heart-shaped, candy-sprinkled (okay, so I know that part isn’t healthy) brownie.

That’s right, Lucia.

Fooled ya’.

And yes, you can have 5 more.

Recipe, please? You got it – here!!

Sidenote: This recipe was hard to make! These took forever to prepare as I had to make the puree, but now that it’s made in the freezer, I’m looking for other recipes to hide this purple healthiness in … any tips? I think it was just hard because it was my first time and it required a lot of ingredients.

Speaking of healthy …

Lovelyn. My, this baby is blowing my mind! I cannot believe how fast growing and healthy and chunky she is! Her nickname is Chunky Lovelyn now. She may not look overly chunky but compared to all my other babies, Lovelyn is the biggest so far! Gooo, Love!

March 3, 2011 - 10:03 pm

Kathy I have also used purple puree very successfully in the taco recipe. PS you are so busted! I can’t believe you didn’t tell me you tried it!

February 25, 2011 - 11:39 am

Tabitha *LOVE* Lucia’s eyes in that photo!! And Lovelyn – sooooo cute!

February 24, 2011 - 9:56 pm

Lori I can honestly say that your “Chunky Lovelyn” is one of the cutest babies I’ve ever met! She just gets cuter and cuter!

February 23, 2011 - 8:25 pm

Jenn I have been using Sneaky Chef for awhile! I love it and the kids don’t know the difference πŸ™‚

February 23, 2011 - 10:49 am

Amy Rasmussen-Harry I use the deceptively Delicious cookbook by Jessica Seinfeld. My husband and 2 older children don’t like veggies. So I hide all different kinds of vggies in different foods they love. I am glad that Lucia likes her muffins.

February 23, 2011 - 7:25 am

Shannon I too use The Sneaky Chef and Deceptively Delicious!!! Lucia and Violet have the same eating habits. I’ve yet to try the brownies – they sure look good! My favorite recipe is cauliflower and zucchini hidden in Mac n cheese!! Makes youbfeel better about giving it to your kids! Lol

February 22, 2011 - 11:28 pm

Amy The sneaky chef cookbook is great! I also just got the Eat Clean for family cookbook and it is great as well. I recently made pancakes with cottage cheese (kids loved them and asked for more!) and carrot apple muffins ( with sweet potato puree!). I love hiding food. Nora is my rabbit and will eat anything except protein….. but the boys….. quite the opposite. Have fun and let me know what other new and wonderfull recipes you’ve tried!

February 22, 2011 - 11:03 pm

Grandma Gerr Awesome! Lucia eating! x

February 22, 2011 - 11:00 pm

Brenda (Gillian’s Mom) Have you tried the Black Bean brownies yet? I have the recipe if you would like it. Very chocolatey!!
Yes, you were a very picky child … and we have always said that Lucia is your side of the family πŸ™‚
Enjoy the journey of finding interesting ways to fool her LOL

February 22, 2011 - 10:53 pm

Tanya Yay!! It’s so frustrating and a bit worrisome when our kids are so picky! My 2yo is the same. I love the idea behind those cookbooks. I tried the cauliflower puree in mac&cheese before and it worked too πŸ™‚ {You’re right though, it’s a lot of work at the outset}. Score for momma!
Precious growing baby πŸ™‚

{Spring}

… For, as when the red-cheeked, dancing girls, April and May, trip home to the wintry, misanthropic woods;
even the barest, ruggedest, most thunder-cloven old oak
will at least send forth some few green sprouts, to welcome such glad-hearted visitants . . .

I’m starting to dream of spring, of grassy fields, pale, pink blossoms and new beginnings…

These darling tutus are from Tutus by Sha Sha – you can find them here on facebook. ]
