The More You Know.

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
Dr. Seuss,

Do you know what’s weird? It’s only been a month of summer and I already miss homeschooling.

Yes, I know – crazy. I don’t miss the [sometimes very rushed] routines in the morning, but I do miss the projects and studies we do together as a family …. even though it’s summer, I’m encouraging the girls to still do a little bit of ‘school work’ … so we’re trying out this new reading incentive program. Reading is very important to me –  I *LOVE* reading (although it has been hard to read over the past few years with babies and such – but I’m finally getting a chance to do my own reading now) and I LOVE to see the girls pick up a book, as well.  I also try very hard to make sure we read together every night before bed. Throughout the school year, we follow the Sonlight reading lists – but I also love to throw a few extra favorites of my own in there for the girls, as well.

Of course, having a reading buddy helps.

[Haven’t the bunnies grown? They are so sweet and the girls had fallen madly in love with them … I’d say it’s safe to say we’re letting the girls keep them (even though Abby has the final say – he hasn’t said no yet!) …]

Depending on the age of the girl, for every five chapters (or for every picture book), they can mark off a square on their reading map – when they reach a landmark star, they have earned a prize. Prizes include ice cream date with person of their choice (grandma, grandpa, mommy, daddy, etc.), a new book, movie night, picnic at the local park, and $5 towards their savings. {Lacey is saving for a pony ….}

You can download the map and prize list here from Wise Owl Books. Once we finish this map,  I may start a new one for the girls, just with different prizes for the second round.

And just for fun … a little photo of Leia … I also love babies in bonnets!

jen heemskerk Gillian, we are doing this exact same thing in our home! It was so funny to hear what each of my girls (and little boy) came up with for their rewards. Some of their rewards are: a big donut at Tim Hortons, Ice cream cone from DQ and a new book from Value Village! haha Reading is such a great way to keep the girls equipped for school in the fall! Love the photo of you newest princess. Is she ever cute?!;-)
