Five minutes ….

I begged Abby to stop the car for five minutes last month on our way to the city … just a few minutes and I knew it would work. And it did.

The newest ‘official’ family photo. Love ….!!

Lisa Post I LOVE LOVE LOVE your new family photo!! It is gorgeous!! What a perfect family you have Gillian ๐Ÿ™‚

Nothing like a good foundation.

“As a parent you must live out your faith in your own life.
It is impossible to give away something you don’t have.
Kids can spot a phony from a mile away. They’re looking for the real deal from their parents.

Living your faith can start with simple things, like showing love, kindness, and generosity.
If your kids see you finding ways to “be a blessing,” it will become a natural and normal way of life for them too.”
-Mary Fairchild

A super sweet e-mail hit my inbox the other morning … it was from a dear friend of mine congratulating me on completing our first half year of homeschooling.

Wow.

I never thought about it until then, but yes …

… we’ve been officially homeschooling for half of the school year … and so far, it’s working!!! ย  I’m so happy (and relieved) to know we can actually *DO* this and not go crazy.ย  [Not every day is easy or fun but it’s still absolutely amazing!] I kind of see homeschooling like a great diet plan – it’s awesome,ย  it’s soooo good for me (and my family), but it’s a lot of work and some days you just don’t want to work out … you just want to eat cake and skip the treadmill, but you KNOW how amazing you feel after you work out and you can see the results happeningย  … so you stick with it … it’s also shown me where I need to improve in my parenting and where I can ease back.

This week, we’ve been taking it a bit easier and enjoying all the awesomeness Christmas has to offer. (Okay, so I know ‘awesomeness’ is not a word, but just give that one to me … k?)

Like decorating gingerbread houses.

This photo was taken right as we started. Little did I know the work cut out for me in that next hour (or four)… four kids, two who can’t actually decorate yet and one who is a perfectionist and one wee baby who decided it was time to be held the entire decorating session … made for a tricky-icing-covered-house-afternoon. The joy (ignorance) on my face was soon replaced with “Okay, we can DO this!! We CAN decorate THREE gingerbread houses, bounce a baby in in the sling and keep everyone from eating so much candy that they will be throwing it all up this afternoon …” oh yeah …..

I’m nuts like that.
Oh, and did I mention all the walls caved in on all three gingerbread houses? Thanks to some super glue and crafty-thinking, I managed to get the houses to stand … and decorated (using the term loosely).

But we had fun.

I think.

… even though the perfectionist-child had to wait 1/2 an hour for me to actually assist her …

And today, we went caroling at a local nursing home. Guys, I almost cried …. looking around the room at the group of about 20 or more senior citizens, listening to our small group of {home schooled} kids sing Christmas carols, read poems, play games with them and hand out homemade chocolate cookies and Christmas ornaments. One sweet resident, who was sitting amongst the rows of elderly, leaned down from her wheelchair and grasped at my two year old, Lucia’s hand, smiled a huge smile and I said, “I love you, I love you, I love ….” and Lucia just smiled back, in that impish way that she does, with her chin leaning down towards her shoulder in a shy, cute way … Lucia didn’t pull away … she just smiled and let the woman hold her hand … I wish I had my camera, but I didn’t want to be invasive.

But it was beautiful.

And I knew in that moment that my girls were indeed learning so much about compassion. And love. And sharing the Christmas cheer with others.

I’m so thankful for this opportunity to school my girls in this way … let’s see where it takes us.

Amanda Oh… and LOVE the aprons!

Amanda Lovely post! I’d love to hear more about your home schooling experience. My daughter is only two and I have another on the way but it’s definitely an idea in my mind. It’s go great you can share these experiences with your beautiful girls!

Janine I have enjoyed watching your little family in pics! That was me with my 4 little ones and homeschooling them…just yesterday… This fall I ‘hung up the pencil’ as my youngest has started grade 9 at a public school. It’s bitter and sweet all in one. I LOVED the incredible blessing that the Lord gave me to be home with them each day. I could never trade it for anything. It was hard…the hardest thing I’ve ever done..but that’s why it was so wonderful. The Lord taught me so much in those years too. Your comments about visiting the old age home was something that we did every month. One of my favorite memories was when we had the seniors play ‘hockey’ in their wheel chairs and the kids pushed them around!! They used a beach ball for the ‘puck’ and foam pool noodles for the ‘sticks’. It was a riot! The seniors got right into it – you could see the competition coming out in them. They hadn’t moved so fast in a long time and they were being children again. Some where getting aggressive with one another and whacking with their noodles! (Not playing nice! ~ just like kids!) Some where slumped over and drooling and could barely hold the noodle but the kids where whisking them around in their wheel chairs…it was a wonderful sight. So much fun and so much emotion too as we watched from the sidelines. Seeing the generations working together for a common goal. How fast life passes us by. It was all overwhelming but a beautiful thing non-the-less. We were all blessed by the interaction.
One of my goals for 2011 is to meet you! Maybe God will land us in the same grocery aisle for a brief moment so I may introduce myself!
May the Lord bless you and keep you and make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you…and your family… as He writes His Name on your lives.

Ellen I think you had an amazing home school day! You found the teachable moments that your girls will never forget, and one day they will share that with you and tell you about all the “remember when we…” with you. Besides…you managed to squish in physics, geometry, architecture and art all in one day, and they didn’t even know it! I love sneaky learning! And that is not even mentioning all they learned (and taught!) at the nursing home.

My kids are 18, 16 adn 8 and we have homeschooled since I pulled our oldest, Robyn, out of kindergarten. There have been no regrets ever, though some days ( weeks sometimes!)are much more challenging than others. But I have found out that the best times of learning have never come from our bookwork really, but from our living life and exploring and doing things as a family. The rest just seems to fall into place. The rewards really come when they start saying the “Remember when..” or “Can we do that again?” or “That was so much fun, I bet they didn’t get to do THAT in school”, and in the treasures they collect and save.

I am so glad that you are enjoying and being blessed in the journey! On the days that are hard..it never hurts to just let go and do something fun with your girlies, because I think that those are the best learning times of all.

Blessings!
Ellie

Made with {Love}

The girls and I have been crafting up a storm.

We’re trying a new craft/ornament every day … so much fun and LOTS of messes. ๐Ÿ™‚

Some crafts have become tags on Christmas presents, some will hang on the tree.

When it comes to Christmas and gift giving, it honestly doesn’t have to be ‘all about money.’

Homemade gifts are definitely the way to go.

It’s heartfelt.

And unique.

And it saves you money. ๐Ÿ™‚

But for someone who can’t sew or make a lot of things, homemade gifts can be challenging. Give me google and an idea, though, and I’m all over it! Today’s idea: homemade body scrub.
Lucia and me made this today … it was {super} easy and it smells divine! We’re giving them as gifts this year (piano teachers, aunts, etc.).

And all you need is sugar, olive oil and essential oil … oh, and a pretty jar.

Mix the sugar with the oil – enough that the sugar is completely covered – and then drop in your choice of essential oil (I choose sugar cookie – which I purchased from this etsy shop). Mix and voila – scrumptious, amazing, EASY {made with love} gifts for you to bless someone with this Christmas.

And it’s easy on your budget, as well. Christmas doesn’t have to be all about the amount of money spent on a present.

It’s all about the {love}

December 9, 2010 - 9:24 am

Kate Norris Wonderful idea! I am going to do this for sure. I love doing homemade crafts. I have 3 kiddies and we are doing crafts by the dozen around here. Yesterday was homemade christmas sugar cookies and paper snowflakes. I can’t wait to try this, even my 2 year old will enjoy mixing the ingredients. I have a craft that you might enjoy. It is making yarn chains with a loop knitter and then you can glue them into doilies. I will try to attach a link for making your own loop knitters. I am sure your girls would love it, my daughter does. http://craftsanity.com/2009/04/craftsanity-on-tv-spool-knitting-for-you-and-the-kids/

Jennifer Heemskerk yes! I’m the first one to comment!! WOOHOO! Anyway, loved this post! So many special memories are made at Christmas and it is great that you take the time to blog about them! You should look into making a blog book. A hard copy of your blog…that would contain all of your journal entries for the year and all of the lovely photos you have posted!
Did your girls make the little cookies?

December 7, 2010 - 9:40 pm

Tara C beautiful post! Lovelyn is getting so big!!

Oh, Christmas Tree.

Every Christmas, as a little girl, my family had a tradition.

We would all go out together and choose our family Christmas tree at the local Christmas Tree farm. Heading out to theย  farm with my younger brother, older sister, mom and dad was always one of the best holiday memories I can remember …. so now, as a mom … as the memory-maker of our family ….

I must follow in my parents’ footsteps. It’s part of my Canadian upbringing. I cannot deny it …

So every year ….

We dig out the warm snow pants.

We stuble through the cluttered basement to find the snow boots. (And believe you me, our basement is cluttered.)

We juggle sixteen pairs of mittens (you know, in case they get soggy) and fourteen pairs of woolly socks.

We dust off the old, rusty saw hidden at the back of the garage.

We pull out the rope and throw in in the trunk.

We grab a toasty-warm hot chocolate and strap the marshmallow-puffy-snowsuit-clad children into their car seats.

And with a twinkle of dread joy in our eyes, we drive off down the highway ….

The annual hunt for our Family Christmas Tree.

No, not at Canadian Tire, Home Depot or Ikea.

We’re talking lets-go-a-huntin’-Christmas-tree-farm-back-in-the-woods kinda trip.

And with four kids 6 and under, let me tell you, it’s a TREAT.

Just look how thrilled the kids are ….. ohhhh, the joy that is ooooozing out of them …..

Wait, let’s try that again.

Take two.

Okay, we got one more smile …. bonus.

Yes, pure joy as the girls cry out “I can’t walk, momma!!” and the littlest L falls to the ground and nearly rolls down the muddy hill which leads to rows and rows of lush Christmas tree.

Happy hearts and joyful smiles abound as we ride the bumpy tractor ride into the field (they tricked us – no horses this year. Apparently, those eager for Christmas trees in November should wait till December to see a horse-drawn-wagon).

And off we go…. walking through the fields and fields of 4 ft, 5 ft, 6 ft. green Christmas trees … wondering, looking, trying to find just that PERFECT tree for our home.

Annnnnd …. many cold feet and joyful carols sung later …. success!!!!!

We found The Tree for our family!

[This is a moment when I am sincerely happy to be the mom and not the dad of this family.]

And off we trudge, back to the Giant Vehicle to strap down the beautiful tree for the ride home.

Of course, we have to warm up the by the fire and drink some more hot chocolate before leaving.

All in all, a beautiful perfectly joyful Christmas tree outing for yet another year…..ย  speaking of which … the splendid tree is now sitting in our living room, waiting to be decorated … we’ll get to it …. and I’m sure there will be lots of fun memories to make during that process. Oh, how I LOVE Christmas.

What tradition do you have for the holiday season?

Tomorrow: winner of the Decal Dude giveaway to be posted!

December 2, 2010 - 10:35 am

Tabitha Love it! Abby looks like he is the happiest man in the world!! (who wouldn’t be, surrounded by 5 beauiful ladies!!)

December 2, 2010 - 7:49 am

Maredyth Dray Ah the family bonding session of picking out the tree! Such high hopes we have as moms to make memories for our children. Only to be met with…pick me up, I’m cold, can we be done now? As Daddy trudges through the snow to pick the most obnoxiously huge tree he can find! Don’t worry Gillian, it gets better, I had a good year last year with my 3. No complaining and fun was had by all, including the dog! lol Going next weekend to do it all again.

December 1, 2010 - 2:26 pm

Stephanie This is sooo good Gillian! Love the way your wrote it! Made me laugh! The girls are SOOO cute! So much character! You & Abby are blessed! Hope you guys have fun decorating the tree! Make sure you post pictures of that too! <3 xoxo

December 1, 2010 - 9:42 am

Tara C Good for you guys for taking all 4 girls out to get a Christmas tree! Making great memories for your girls ๐Ÿ™‚ My fave holiday tradition is just getting to see a good chunk of our family that we don’t get to see most of the rest of the year.

December 1, 2010 - 9:33 am

Annie Ahhh Gillian, what fantastic memories you’re making for your girls, even if it’s not all roses ๐Ÿ™‚ The biggest part for me I think is all the holiday baking I took part in as a child and how I bake with my children now too… and realize how much harder it was for my mom to let us FOUR kids HELP vs doing it herself!! And our christmas tree was always from our farm… we’d set out one november day before the snow to tag the beautiful trees and go back closer to christmas to cut one of them down (if we remembered where the tags were) or when we got older just sent my dad with detailed instructions of WHERE the tagged tree were… and how a few christmases we’d have to send him back because he wouldn’t have bothered looking for ours and got twig trees intead!! This year, for the first time I’m taking my kids to my parents farm to get our tree and I can’t wait (though my husband is very much a ‘perfect tree from a christmas tree farm picked up at a local store’ kind of guy so he’s having a slight issue with the potential of a very non-perfect tree… but it’s all about the experience, right? ๐Ÿ™‚ )

November 30, 2010 - 2:11 pm

Sherry Alas, we do not leave the house to go Christmas tree hunting…..we do that in the basement! Our tree has been up for a couple of weeks now. Nick & Avery like to put on their special ornaments….but they like to make ornaments more. Baking is our most favourite thing to do….especially my grandma’s shortbread cookies with icing! Christmas is NOT about presents in this house…it’s about giving …. our time, our talent, our hearts … and about sharing with all those around us, and enjoying all the wonderful memories made at this most special time of the year! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

November 30, 2010 - 11:57 am

Shannon Littrell and this post makes ME jealous of YOUR geographic location.
Snow pants???? Who knew?

November 30, 2010 - 11:37 am

Brenda (Gillian’s Mom) Love the story and the pictures! Too bad there wasn’t more snow. We have to tickle Lucia more ๐Ÿ™‚ xoxo

November 30, 2010 - 11:27 am

Sherri Quite the memory maker! I’m sure they will mostly remember the fun parts of finding the tree, hot chocolate, and firepit warmth. As adults you may not be as lucky, but it makes great photo ops. Merry Christmas to you and yours. <3

November 30, 2010 - 11:16 am

Grandma Gerr An awesome fun freezing time for you all! What fun for them all! xx <3 xx

November 30, 2010 - 11:09 am

Brittany Christmas tree hunting is something me and my dad always do! It is one of my favourite things about Christmas ๐Ÿ™‚
