Old Fashioned Summer {A Well Ordered Home}

“The importance of sacredly guarding the family relation can not well be overestimated.
It is the found-soon of all that is good and pure both in civilization and religion.
Take this away, and the whole fabric must topple and fall.
Demoralize the family and you thereby destroy both domestic and national happiness,
and undermine completely the temple of virtue and hope,
and prepare the way of moral and civil desolation.”
~ Home– Its Importance, 1878

It is a gentle Sunday afternoon, where the island seems to be resting quietly, a moment of calm well required after a few very busy summer weeks. We are in a full blissful summer routine now, with the garden needing care, projects underway and animals (and children!) growing in the healthy sunshine. So many times, I stop and thank the Lord for this good life.

It only takes a few minutes of stepping out into the world to see society is falling, people are broken and governments are failing.

Ladies, guard your homes, pray diligently for your children, build up your home life with contentment and joy. Do your utmost best to work with your husband to make a well-ordered home life, creating a beautiful environment for your children and yourself to grow and be nurtured. Do not follow the ways of the world – it will bring emptiness to your heart. Do not become bitter and angry at those who hurt you – allow yourself to find the joy and beauty in your surroundings.

Bake the bread.

Clean the home.

Wash the sheets.

Enjoy your children.

Love your husband.

And plant some flowers.

This is a beautiful life, if you choose to see it that way.

“The family circle may be – ought to be –
the most charming and delightful place on earth,
the centre of the purest affections and the most desirable associations,
as well as the most attractive and exalted beauties to be found on this side of paradise.
Nothing can exceed in beauty and sublimity the quietude, peace, harmony, affection, and happiness of a well-ordered family, where virtue is nurtured and every good principle is fostered and sustained.

From the well-ordered homes in this great, broad land of religious
and civil liberty not only are great and good statesmen to come,
and eminently pious and intelligent divines;
but what is equally important,
from these homes must come the more common populace of the land,
upon whose intelligence, patriotism and purity
depends the continuance of the rich blessings.”
– Home Government; 1878

Susan lane What a wonderful post,to ‘guard your homes’ is so very important. Such beautiful photographs your children are growing so fast, into beautiful young ladies and strong little men. I hope your garden is fruitful this year, we are struggling with lack of rain here in England. Blessings to you all.

Penny Price Thank you Gigi for a beautiful post, both words and pictures. Your girls are growing into such lovely young ladies and the family looks healthy and happy. Well done! Raising a big family, animals, gardening, housekeeping etc is a lot of work but so rewarding. I also believe that keeping our home a happy and charming place of peace is so important as a buffer against the outside world. Sending you best wishes.

Laura What lovely photos and thoughts! You have filled your life with beauty amidst the practical. I am learning how to do that as I have found having something lovely to look at whilst weeding is enjoyable. Did you daughters make their dresses? They look so beautiful and feminine.❤️
